Nominated for nine academy awards and winner of two, LA Confidential was a movie that for me defines 1950 cop movies. It follows the paths of three detectives each with their own motivations and styles as they crack a large mob murder investigation. Brilliant acting by almost a totally unknown cast (aside from Kevin Spacy and Kim Basinger). A wonderful story that unfolds as the movie goes, and a powerful action film as well. While it plays out a lot like an old time detective movie, it does so with an attitude that really makes it stand out. The twists and turns require you discover the real plot as the detectives do. The DVD is a New Line piece of art. A full Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, 16x9 enhanced transfer and three little featurettes really fill it out. I could only have asked for a commentary track. A must own DVD on a wonderful movie.
