Evil Dead is probably the staple in cheezy over the top horror movies. Probably being most similar to Hellraiser as far as worth goes. We get the typical plotline, five young folk go off into the woods for a retreat and stumble into bad evil stuff. There is about an hour of people walking slowly and reaching for door handles and maybe 20 or 30 minutes of good old fashioned blood and gore. I think my favorite thing about this movie is the progression of the main charactor, Ash, throughout the three movies. This one doesn't do much except introduce him into the world of the evil dead, but in the sequals he becomes more and more the hero. The movie does make you pretty uncomfortable with the stereotypical surprises and succeeds in grossing you out at just about every turn. The DVD is a true collectors edition with a 1.33 to 1 video transfer which I watched matted at 1.78 to 1, a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, two commentary tracks including a very entertaining commentary from Bruce Campbell, the lead actor, and other nice extras. Quite a fun little horror movie and an excellent DVD.
