Time Bandits was a childhood favorite of mine. As I watched it, I could hear the next line in my head, though until now I was too young to understand it. Terry Gilliam is a master of detail and a master of patching together a fantasy that redefines what a fantasy is about. Time Bandits succeeds once again in breaking the mold that movies follow and creating a truly fantastic adventure full of detail and depth. The story is funny and fantastic. Criterion has been dropping the ball in the DVD world. They used to be the best company for digital movies, but their DVDs are usually worse than discs costing half the price. They refuse to put out any 16x9 enhanced discs and refuse to remaster the audio into a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. This movie could have used both. What they do offer are plenty of extras and this disc fits that as well. There is a commentary with both directors, writers and actors as well as a nice portfolio of movie stills. Overall, a classic movie but a dissappointing DVD.
